Writing & editing

Editing

There are many forms of editing, but one and all are important to any project with written words, also known as copy. For business writing, a single editing pass will often reveal most of the problems with spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax, ambiguity and choice of words. When I edit business copy, I also have a marketing focus and constantly ask myself how the target market will receive this or that phrase. Non-fiction articles written for magazines and newspapers will differ from those written for websites and a good editor will adjust their tactics accordingly.

Longer works, whether non-fiction or fiction, benefit from a structural edit in addition to a line by line edit because this process specifically asks how well the piece fits together as a whole. Depending on your project, I can do either or both of these types of editing. When a piece is already highly accurate, all that may be left to do is some proof-reading and a continuity edit. Proof-reading is simpler than line by line editing because it usually only incorporates the fixing of typos, spelling mistakes and minor punctuation problems. Anything more than this and you would probably be better off calling it a line by line edit. A continuity edit is similar to a structural edit, except the editor specifically looks for links between different parts of the text that somehow don't line up.

My editing experience

In volunteer or freelance scenarios

2009
Edited and provided a report on the effectiveness of the copy and other aspects of the French Language Services website http://www.frenchls.com.

2006–present
VOLUNTARY: As webmaster for The Specusphere, I use my editing skills from time to time when working on our static pages (about us etc.) and I am also a sub-editor of articles when time allows.

In employment situations

2008–2010
During two years of employment with a network marketing company, I was their communications officer, often working with US versions of websites, brochures, email newsletters and more, adapting them to suit the spelling, legal restrictions and marketing focus of the Australian and New Zealand markets. I learned many interesting facts to do with multi-level marketing, health products, therapeutic goods administration advertising restrictions, trademarks, direct selling, Internet Marketing, search engine optimisation and more.

2004–2008
During four years of employment with a non-profit organisation, I worked in a variety of roles including translation coordinator, graphic designer, email newsletter designer, website article poster, multimedia manager and more. In each of these roles, my primary function was not to edit, however I did use my proofreading and editing skills on a daily basis. I learned some valuable skills in copyright, permissions, scientific terminology, website design, email communications and publishing workflows (print and electronic).
